Yingxiu is in the epicentre. With over ten thousand of population before the earthquake, eventually only three thousand people are alive. You can imagine the pain of these survivors.
Colleagues from Sun Yat-Sen (ZhongShan) University visited Yingxiu in June 2008 and established a temporary social work station there. As a long term partner in developing rural social work, our PolyU staff visited the disaster area in August, 2008. As a result, the “PolyU-ZhongShan Yingxiu Social Work Station” has formally been established.
In the initiate stage, the station was a bridge between the donors and survivors. Our staff assessed the needs of the local people and identified the potential donors. Once agreement made, we were responsible to distribute the basic necessities directly to the survivors without delay and wastage.
After satisfying the basic needs of the needy, we then formulate our long term goal. Re-establishing their community is their hope. How to develop the capacity of local people in striving for their living and get rid of the pain is thus our main focus. In view of this, craft making as an income generating effort is the first step. An eco-tourism and eco-farming projects will also be launched. Within three years, several production co-operatives will be formed and they become the backbone in striving for their sustainable livelihood.
