Overview

Immediately after the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake, the Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS) has been working actively and closely with the local Chinese authorities, universities and NGOs in both Mainland China and Hong Kong on post-earthquake relief projects. From May 21 towards the end of August, 2008, APSS took the lead in organizing a series of programs, mostly adopting the training-of-trainers approach, to provide immediate support to over 1,000 disaster relief personnel. In addition, more than 1,500 children in Mianzhu, Abazhou and Pengzhou joined our summer programs in 2008.

Moving on from the rescue stage, we endeavor to contribute our professional support to ensure sustainable development in the disaster affected communities in the most seriously affected earthquake zones. The following post-earthquake reconstruction projects are conducted in Sichuan currently:

Looking ahead, the road to disaster recovery and rebuilding is arduous. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has formed an inter-disciplinary task force to coordinate inter-departmental post-disaster relief work in Sichuan. The signing of a landmark agreement by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Sichuan University on June 21, 2008 paved the way for the establishment of the Sichuan Post-disaster Reconstruction Support and Research Centre in the province. This newly established Centre would provide cross-disciplinary training, research and services covering health and medical support, psychological support and social services, construction and engineering, as well as business revitalization.

And last but not the least, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our donors for their generous support in our continuous efforts during the long term reconstruction of disaster-affected areas in Sichuan.
